The Future of Invoicing: Have Your Say on the UK's E-Invoicing Revolution!

Want to have your say on the way E-invoicing will work going forward in the UK? Join this DBT consultation and be a part of it.

Big changes could be coming to the way UK businesses and government departments handle invoices! HMRC and the Department for Business & Trade (DBT) have launched a consultation on electronic invoicing (e-invoicing), and they want YOUR input. This is your chance to shape the future of how businesses streamline payments, reduce admin headaches, and even improve cash flow.

What’s the Big Deal About E-Invoicing?

E-invoicing is a digital way of creating, issuing, processing, and storing invoices—no more paper, no more lost documents, and far fewer manual errors. It speeds up payments, makes tax reporting smoother, and could save businesses valuable time and money. However, despite the obvious benefits, e-invoicing adoption in the UK is still relatively low. That’s where you come in.

The Consultation: What You Need to Know

The government wants to hear from businesses of all sizes, industry bodies, representative groups, and even individuals. They’re gathering insights on:

  • How to standardise e-invoicing across the UK
  • Ways to boost adoption among businesses and government departments
  • How different approaches could integrate with existing business systems

This consultation is open for 12 weeks, from 13 February 2025 to 7 May 2025—so now’s the time to make your voice heard!

Why Should You Care?

Switching to e-invoicing could mean:

✔ Faster payments – Get paid quicker with smoother transactions

✔ Less admin – Reduce paperwork and free up time for more important tasks

✔ Fewer tax errors – Improve accuracy in tax reporting and compliance

✔ Better cash flow – Automated processes help businesses stay on top of finances.

Right now, there’s no single standard for e-invoicing in the UK, which means businesses use a mix of different systems—some of which don’t talk to each other. The exception is suppliers to NHS England, who must use the Pan-European Public Procurement On-Line (PEPPOL) network. The consultation aims to explore whether this sort of unified approach would work better for everyone.

What’s Next?

The government is considering different models and levels of involvement to encourage e-invoicing adoption. Could this be the push needed to make digital invoicing the new norm? Your input will help shape policy decisions that affect businesses across the UK.

So, whether you’re a business owner, finance professional, industry expert, or just someone passionate about efficiency, now’s your chance to have your say!

📅 The consultation will run for 12 weeks from 13 February 2025 to 7 May 2025.

💡 Get involved and help shape the future of e-invoicing in the UK.
